Launch Press Release

Nov 5, 2011

Pousadas are the South American alternative to serviced apartments. Ranging from the very basic to upmarket places and all privately run, they are well-respected for their friendly and helpful personal service.

A specially refurbished old colonial building, Quinta Azul (meaning Blue House), comprises eight beautifully designed luxury rooms, all boasting state-of-the-art fittings and antique furniture, including 400-thread cotton sheets and soft furnishings – a few even have four-poster beds. Lying in tranquil, lush green gardens overlooking breathtaking views of the city, it is ideal for those after comfortable, affordable accommodation to rival Rio’s top hotels.

Just 10 minutes away from Rio’s beaches with breathtaking views of the city, Quinta Azul lies right in the heart of lively Santa Teresa village, a small historic town that likes to party. Described by those in the know as the South American Montmartre and one of Rio’s hidden gems, Santa Teresa is packed with local artists, galleries, cafes and restaurants. It also boasts its own 100-year-old yellow tram, the Bonde, that takes you down downtown to the city centre in only 10 minutes, following in the footsteps of rich merchants who used to commute this way from their mansions a century ago. Sitting in the heart of the village, Quinta Azul is the village’s only luxury pousada.

Quinta Azul’s London-based owner Gordon Lewis fell in love with Rio while on holiday in Brazil and eventually bought two colonial properties in the bohemian Santa Teresa district. Spotting a gap in the market, his first pousada, Quinta Rosa (Pink House), opened for business two years ago.

Says Gordon: ‘There’s much more to Rio than its beaches and Santa Teresa is one example; the hillside villages have a lot of character. It didn’t take me long to realise that I could build on Quinta Rosa’s success by opening Quinta Azul. Only five minutes down the road, Azul will offer the same winning blend of quality, design and real value for money which sets Rosa apart from Rio’s top hotels and more basic serviced apartments.’
